Preparing for Your First Guided Adventure (What I Tell Every First-Timer)
Every so often someone tells me they’ve never done a guided trip before and they’re a little nervous about it — like they’re worried they’ll lose control of their own vacation. I get it. If you’re used to planning everything yourself, handing the reins to someone else feels strange at first. So here’s what I actually tell people before their first one.
You still get a say. All of it, actually.
A guided adventure doesn’t mean someone else decides your trip and you just show up. It means the heavy lifting — routes, logistics, permits, the stuff that eats hours of research — is handled for you, while the actual shape of the trip is still built around what you want. The best guided trips feel less like following a script and more like having someone who already knows the terrain walking beside you.
Pack for flexibility, not perfection
First-timers almost always overpack for scenarios that never happen and underpack for the boring stuff — layers, a real rain jacket, good socks. Weather on adventure trips changes fast, and the group isn’t going to wait around while you dig through a suitcase. A smaller, smarter bag beats a big, thorough one every time.

Fitness matters less than people think — pacing matters more
You don’t need to be in peak shape for most guided adventures. What actually matters is being honest with your guide about your pace and limits before day one, not halfway up a trail. Good guides plan around that information; they can’t plan around what they don’t know.
The nerves are normal, and honestly a good sign
If you’re a little anxious the week before, that’s not a red flag — it usually means you’re about to do something a bit outside your routine, which is kind of the point. Every first-timer I’ve worked with has said some version of the same thing afterward: they wished they’d stopped overthinking the prep and just trusted the process a bit sooner.
That’s really the whole tip, if I’m honest. Prepare well, then let go of the rest.
